Höllental Locomotive Specialist for Steep Rail Lines – Originally, the 10 class 85 heavy three-cylinder tank locomotives placed into service were built for the Höllental Line in the Black Forest previously operated with expensive and time-consuming cogwheel technology. The brawny class 85 units were in a position to master this difficult line exclusively with more economical adhesion operation. There they turned in excellent results up to the conversion to electric motive power. Then several of these athletic units took up service on other steep German lines such as Erkrath-Hochdahl until the end of their operation.
