With the rebuilding of the German automobile industry, the German Federal Railroad was quick to order suitable rolling stock that could transport these valuable vehicles rationally, reliably, and carefully. Special bilevel transport cars were built on the steel design of the then modern type Omm 52 and Omm 55 high side gondolas, and these cars were permanently coupled together in pairs. The end walls and the side doors were removed. There were crossover plates on both levels so that automobiles could be driven over the entire length of the train from both ends. The upper deck at both ends of a pair of cars could be lowered to make a ramp to drive the cars up onto the railroad car.
