The locomotive classes 185.2 for the DB AG and the 482 for the SBB Cargo originated in Bombardier's TRAXX (Transnational Railway Applications with eXtreme fleXibility) family. These locomotives are used for medium heavy passenger and freight domestic service as well as for cross-border operations.
New regulations forced Bombardier to make changes to the locomotives from 2005 on: these locomotives have been equipped with a locomotive body better able to sustain crashes, which makes them look brawnier and more powerful compared to the predecessor. Other changes involve the electric power converter system, which does not affect the looks of the locomotives. Other railroads are also making use of these innovative locomotives, since individual wishes and requirements are relatively easy to satisfy with innovative "package" solutions.
